Activity 1

What is the Congress of Vienna?
When Napoleon was defeated the European governments wanted peace and formed The Congress of Vienna are a series of secret meetings in Europe where all European nations got together and tried to achieve security and stability through out Europe. It was planned for it to last 4 weeks but it actually lasted 8 months.

Who was Metternich and what were his beliefs?
Klemens Von Metternich was a prince minister of Austria. Of the five “great powers” he was the most influential. Metternich did not agree with the Revolution ideas, but instead wanted to keep things as they were. He established 3 goals which include make the countries around France stronger. Also, ensure that all countries had equal power for them not to fight. At last, he wanted the people that Napoleon took their power, regain their power (royal families)
Describe the principle of legitimacy. Provide an example.
The Legitimacy was an agreement the great powers agreed to, that established that the governments had to hand the throne back to the royal families and rulers that were driven out of power by Napoleon.

Activity 2
Describe the political changes that took place as a result of the Congress of Vienna.
Effects in Latin America
Some effects that the Congress of Vienna had in Latin America was that they gave the Spanish king his position back and he wanted to take control of the American colonies and as a result he increased the control he had over the Spanish colonies and this made the Mexicans very mad and they gained independence. The Brazilians also declared themselves as independent and other Spanish colonies freed themselves from Spanish rule.

Activity 3
Describe the long-term effects of the Congress of Vienna
The Congress of Vienna left a legacy for continents to keep balance power between them, but this effort decreased power of France, as well as increased Britain's and Prussia's. It lasted only 40 years when there was peace and after that there was war against Russia.

Use this physical outline map of Europe to visualize how Congress of Vienna attempted to create a balance of power. Using colors, show on the map the territory of France in 1817 and the territories of the countries that surrounded it.

  • Why would joining the Austrian Netherlands and the Dutch Republic help to contain France?
By making countries surrounding France stronger and therefore making it harder for France to seize control over other nations.
  • How did joining the 39 German states into a confederation help keep France in check?
By unifying the 39 states and creating the German Confederation, this made it stronger and more balanced to contain France and making it difficult to overpower other weaker nations.

  • Why didn't the Congress of Vienna take more land from France?
They did not take more land from France since all countries should have equal power. If  France gained more power, they would threaten all again. On the other hand, if France was powerless, other countries might gain power and threaten all other countries.

Eugenio Tijerina Position Paper

Committee: CSW
Topic: Establishing and enforcing wage parity between genders
Country: Republic of Congo
Delegate: Eugenio Tijerina
School: Colegio Ingles

Women around the world earn less money than men at every stage of life, and women get older and continue into retirement the wage gap widens. Women at all education levels lose significant amounts of income due to the wage gap, but women with the most education lose the most in earnings. According to some estimates women represent 70% of world’s poor. However, in many countries it goes far beyond loss of formal jobs, most of women tend to work in the informal sector. Domestics in cities do not show up in official unemployment numbers. In most places women are paid less by just the fact that they are women, especially women do worse depending on their education level.

The Republic of Congo is in favor of establishing and enforcing wage parity between genders. The 70% percent of the population of The Republic of Congo lives in poverty. Also, its life expectancy is of 54.91 years, and it is believed that if the poverty in The Republic Congo is reduced by establishing and enforcing wage parity between genders, the life expectancy may rise. The Republic of Congo hopes that the wage parity between genders is enforced in Congo and Worldwide because it would be beneficial in more than just the stated reasons. It may generate new jobs, raise the economy, and people would feel equality, no matter the gender. Still, in Congo women suffer from abuse a lot, and it would be beneficial if wage parity was enforced since it may generate the employment of women. Congolese women have limited access to education too. Education is also an important factor with wage parity, since it may vary the salary for women. Still, Congo has no doubt about establishing and enforcing wage parity between genders.

The Republic of Congo recommends doing whatever needs to be done to establish and enforce wage parity between genders and stop any other deeds that are being unfair to the genders. Congo also proposes the following solutions: Set a minimum payment limit for genders that would make it more equal. Also, promote awareness so people can see this conflict and can also take action, and last but not least set priorities and privileges to more people so that genders can access to jobs easier. The Republic of Congo hopes this can come to a solution with the countries that support to this cause as well as the cooperation and consideration of the other countries.
